The Foothill girls’ volleyball team continued its late season surge, winning a pair of East Bay Athletic League matches, then going 3-1 on the weekend in the Berkeley tournament.
In league the Falcons opened with a 25-11, 25-9, 25-12 win over Livermore. The highlights came from Sophia Zhang (9 digs, 5 aces), Ilayda Caglar (7 kills, 5 service points), Serena Wu (5 kills) and Sewa Adesuyi-Fasuyi (4 kills).
The second match of the week was against California, and the Falcons came through with a win again, beating the Grizzlies 26-24, 25-20, 24-26, 26-24.
This time the top performances came from Paige Nelson (22 kills, 11 digs), Danielle Yeh (40 assists, 11 digs), Brooke Stedman (14 digs, 10 assists, 6 kills) and Olivia So (15 digs, 11 service points).
At the Berkeley tournament, the Falcons beat American (2-0), Vallejo (2-0) and Northgate (2-1). That put them in the semifinals where they dropped a 2-1 match.
Amador girls’ water polo
The Dons have been busy the last couple weeks, traveling south for the 2025 Arroyo Grande Fall Classic, as well as playing non-league and EBAL games.
Down south, Amador finished third in the Bronze division of the Arroyo Grande event.
The first game of the tournament was a 10-9 loss to Morro Bay. Susan Swyers had four goals and Addi Drain had three to pace the Dons. Abigail Jones and Dorian Selway had one goal each to round out the scoring.
Game two was a 17-5 win over Cabrillo, with Swyers scoring four in the first half to lead the way. Selway, Drain and Claire Kunich each got two goals. Natalie Knosp and Anusha Shelatkar scored one goal apiece.
In the third game, the Dons beat Porterville 13-8 with Swyers scoring 11 times to lead the way. Jones and Drain had one goal each. Deep Suresh had 10 saves in the goal.
The fourth game of the tournament saw the Dons fall in a tough 12-9 game to Sanger. Jones had three goals to pace the Dons, while Selway, Swyers and Drain had two goals each.
In their final game of the tournament Amador fell 16-8 to Righetti. Drain and Jones each had two goals with one goal each going to Swyers, Selway, Shelatkar and Genna Schmidt.
Swyers was named to the All-Tournament team.
Back in town, the Dons beat Dougherty Valley 8-5. Drain, Swyers and Jones scored two goals apiece, with Shelatkar and Alami scoring one each.
Finally, the Dons lost 10-9 to Liberty in a non-league match to wrap up the busy week.
Swyers scored four goals, with Schmidt adding two for Amador. Drain, Suresh and Jones had one each. Suresh added 13 saves in the goal, keeping the Dons in the contest.
Breeders’ Cup Handicapping contest
The Pleasanton Off-Track Betting continues to be open and thrive at the Alameda County Fairgrounds. Next up in terms of events is the Free Breeders’ Cup Handicapping contest on Oct. 31 to Nov. 1.
The contest involves picking the winner of all 14 races in the Breeders’ Cup. The only requirement is that you must be on site at the Pleasanton OTB on Saturday, Nov. 1.
The scoring system for the picks is a 5-3-1 system, meaning your selection must finish in the top three to earn points for the contest.
The Pleasanton OTB will be open 9:45 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. on both days of the Breeders’ Cup, with the deadline for the contest being 2:40 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 31.
Entry forms will be available Thursday, Oct. 30 at the Pleasanton OTB. An in-depth handicapping of all Breeders’ Cup races will be available Friday, Oct. 31 in the morning.
