Professional baseball is back in the Tri-Valley, with the Dublin Leprechauns beginning their second season at Fallon Sports Park last week and more than a dozen games left on the home schedule through July.

The Leprechauns, formed after the franchise moved from Santa Rosa before last summer, are part of the Pecos League — an independent professional league of teams throughout the western half of the United States, with the Dublin squad playing teams in division between Bakersfield and Marysville.

“We are very excited to begin our 18 game home season here at Leprechaun Field,” Guy Houston, director of baseball operations and former Dublin mayor, told the Weekly heading into the season.

“We have players from 11 states coming here to play Pecos League Baseball,” he added. “Food and beverage and great baseball; it doesn’t get better than that … Tuesdays and Thursdays all summer, the fan experience will be upgraded both on and off the field.”

The local team opened their home schedule with a 6-0 loss against the defending champion San Rafael Pacifics on May 28, with great turnout for the game that coincided with the Dublin Historical Society Night promotion, according to Houston. The Leprechauns bounced back two days later with a thrilling 11-9 victory on walkoff grand slam by Angus Stayte to notch their first home win of the young season.

Dublin was still searching for its first away win of the young season headed into Wednesday night’s game, the front end of a home-and-home against the Marysville Drakes — results of which were pending as of publication time.

Their next home games after the weekend are versus Marysville next Tuesday (June 11) and the Bakersfield Train Robbers next Thursday (June 13). The Leprechauns have 14 more home games on their regular season schedule, with the finale set for July 28 against Marysville. All games start at 6 p.m.
