Community members gathered downtown Livermore last weekend to protest recent U.S. airstrikes on nuclear enrichment facilities in Iran.

Dubbed “No War with Iran” and organized by Livermore Indivisible and Indivisible Tri-Valley, Sunday’s protest attracted approximately 100 people at its peak.

The message they gathered for: Choose diplomacy over escalation and war.

This one-hour “rapid response” protest was organized to meet what Indivisible Tri-Valley co-founder Ward Kanowsky described as an immediate need to voice opposition.

“We didn’t want to wait for a week or even a day really to register our resistance, our total disagreement with this unprovoked bombing,” Kanowsky told Livermore Vine.

At the protest in Livermorium Plaza, there were a total of three speakers, a sign-making table and a young ukulele player who sang popular songs from The Beatles like “All You Need is Love” and “Revolution,” according to Kanowsky.

Planned over the course of approximately 12 hours, Kanowsky said the turnout was significant.

The protest was organized with short lead time to ensure the community could respond to the bombings amid any other oncoming events, Kanowsky explained.

“Following Trump and the administration is drinking from a firehose because of their strategy of flooding the zone and to just keep on throwing and throwing stuff at you,” Kanowsky said. “So if we were to wait, the impact of this—as far as what an outrageous action this was—might be lost because we might move onto the next outrageous thing that he does.”

There are currently no plans for a follow-up protest regarding Iran, but Indivisible Tri-Valley intends to host a demonstration in the Tri-Valley July 17 in honor of late Rep. John Lewis.
