Foothill girls soccer tops rival Amador during busy week

Spring sports season on horizon; remember to send in those results

by Dennis Miller

The Foothill girls soccer team traveled across Pleasanton last week to take on rival Amador Valley and came away with a 3-1 win.

Playing their fourth East Bay Athletic League game in less than a week, the Falcons jumped out to a 2-0 lead on a pair of goals from Sarah Mirr -- her 11th and 12th goals of the season.

Amador rallied back and cut the lead in half before the end of the first half.

After a balanced first half, the Dons got the better run of play and the Falcons needed to rely on freshman goalie Maddie Goldberg and strong defense to keep the lead.

With Amador pressing forward on a corner kick late in the game, the Falcons were able to counter and get the final goal of the game. Peyton Raun controlled the corner for the Falcons and then raced up the field with the ball, beating the retreating Amador defenders for the final goal.

In their second game of the week, the Falcons took on Monte Vista, the top ranked team in the nation, and suffered a 3-1 loss.

The Mustangs worked out to a 3-0 lead before Raun got one back for Foothill. In the end it wasn't enough, as the Falcons dropped their first game of the season.

The Falcons completed the grueling stretch of six games in 10 days by playing to a 1-1 final with Granada.

Foothill took a 1-0 lead when Allison Casey set up Taylor Noval with a wonderful ball. The Falcons held the lead deep into the second half until Granada tied it with a long shot.

Other than the loss to Foothill, the Dons picked up a pair of wins last week.

On Jan. 25, the Dons took a shootout over Dublin with a 4-3 win.

Molly Murphy paced the scoring with two goals. Kieran Wallace continued her strong season with a goal and assist. The rest of the girls all battled as a unit to stave off a stingy Dublin team.

Then on Jan. 27, the Dons beat another North Coast Section power, Liberty, by a 2-0 final. Murphy again had two goals, while a strong defense and midfield preserved the shutout.

Spring sports starting

It's almost time for the spring sports to take over the athletic landscape, and we want to make sure we get the results from as many teams as possible, but we need your help to do it.

How can you help?

If you spend 10 minutes a week, you can make sure that your child's team get their results in the paper each week. All you need to do is email the results of the week's games by Sunday evening, along with any highlights, to me at acesmag@aol.com.

Many times, teams ask for parent volunteers and here is your chance to pitch in and help!

You don't have to be a writer as I am more than happy to put together the story for you; just send me the results. We are also always on the lookout for pictures and all we ask is to identify the players in the pictures as well as credit for who took the picture.

One final request -- please send in the weekly results, win or lose. It is always amazing how we seem to hear from teams when things are going good, and then get crickets when they lose. But our Pleasanton high-schoolers often star in each game, regardless of the result.

Please feel free to reach out with any questions.
