The Livermore Area Recreation and Park District’s aquatics team recently won the Outstanding Program Award from a nonprofit pool operator organization for furthering aquatic safety and relevant training.

Granted by the Bay Area Public Pool Operators Association, the team was commended for transitioning from the traditional American Red Cross lifeguarding curriculum to the StarGuard ELITE system, a more modern, scenario-based lifeguard training program, LARPD officials said in a statement announcing the award.
Under the StarGuard ELITE system, trainees focus on situational awareness, prevention, teamwork, preparedness and consistent skill development, LARPD officials explained.
The new program directly supports the safety of patrons at LARPD facilities, park district officials added.
Leading the program implementation was LARPD recreation supervisor Patrick Lucky and recreation coordinator Alyssa Smith.
“Our goal is to give the community the highest level of safety we can,” Lucky said in a statement. “This training model helps lifeguards respond more effectively, stay engaged and work together so families who visit our pools can feel confident in the protection we provide.”
As part of a regional discussion at a recent Bay Area Public Pool Operators Association meeting about improvements to aquatic safety, LARPD’s aquatics team presented to other agencies their process of transitioning between training programs.
