Hundreds of athletes from throughout the Bay Area arrived at Amador Valley High School last Saturday to compete in the Special Olympics Northern California Spring Games.
The competition featured 12 delegations of more than 370 child and adult athletes with intellectual disabilities from Alameda, Contra Costa, Napa, San Francisco, San Joaquin, San Mateo and Solano counties vying in volleyball and track and field events.
Pleasanton RADD (Recreational Activities for the Developmentally Disabled) athletes earned a variety of medals in the Pleasanton competition, many now eligible for spots in the Special Olympics Summer Games in late June at UC Davis.
In track and field, Camellia Pinhero won gold in the 800-meter and 400M runs and took silver in the 200M dash, according to coach Kay King.
Ryan Butterly earned gold in the 1,500M, 800M and 400M runs; Lisa Burley won gold in the softball throw, 50M walk and 100M walk; and Pleasanton’s Adam Pinney took gold in the 50M and 100M walks and silver in the softball throw.
In volleyball, the RADD A team went undefeated to win a gold medal and the RADD B team netted a silver medal.
Hosted by the Amador Valley Athletic Boosters, the Spring Games also featured volunteers from Amador Valley and Foothill high schools, Pleasanton and Hart middle schools, National Charity League, Boys Team Charity, Young Men’s Service League and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, along with other groups from throughout the Tri-Valley.
