Adjourning for Jeb

State Sen. Jerry McNerney (D-Pleasanton) recently adjourned a California Senate session to honor Pleasanton Weekly founding editor Jeb Bing, who died in late December.

The two got to know each other while Bing covered McNerney’s time in Congress, and they forged a long-lasting mutual respect. The senator spent just over three minutes talking about Bing’s life and acknowledging the impact he had on the Pleasanton community in comments read into the record during the Feb. 2 senate session.

“Jeb was a beloved man in the Pleasanton community because of his constant presence,” McNerney said. “Jeb built the Weekly into a model of local journalism and became the face of news in our community.”

Suicide prevention workshop

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) Tri-Valley chapter will be hosting a free suicide prevention workshop this Saturday (Feb. 28) for parents whose child or teenager is at risk for suicide.

The nonprofit, which addresses mental health issues by providing support and resources to those who need it in the Tri-Valley, will team up with the NAMI Alameda County chapter, the Alan Hu Foundation and the Genesis Community Development Corporation in order to host this event.

Attendees can join via Zoom or attend the event in person in Livermore — the workshop will take place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information on the location, who will be speaking and to register for the event, visit www.namitrivalley.org.

MathCounts success

The Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District hosted its 30th annual Livermore MathCounts Competition last month as part of an academic tradition that spotlights students’ problem-solving and mathematical skills.

During the Jan. 31 competition, 149 middle school students gathered at Granada High School to solve math problems, ranging from sixth to eighth grade standards, district officials said in a statement. Awards were granted to individual students and campus teams.

“It’s amazing to see MathCounts reach its 30th year in Livermore,” MathCounts coordinator Robyn Schlicter said in a statement. “For decades, this program has helped students challenge themselves, build confidence and see that math can be both rigorous and rewarding.”

Livermore Valley Half Marathon

The 12th annual Livermore Valley Half Marathon, which offers runners a unique race that takes them through the heart of the Tri-Valley’s wine country, is set to return this Sunday (March 1).

The event will also offer a 5K and kid’s run and will finish with a beer and wine festival at the end.

“Traverse lush vineyards, thriving hop fields, and timeless olive groves, soaking in the beauty and charm of this iconic region,” the event’s website states. “Don’t miss this perfect blend of fitness, fun, and California charm!”

According to the website, the half marathon will start and finish in downtown Livermore and will take participants through “scenic vineyards, past the iconic Olivina Arch, and into the serene beauty of Sycamore Grove, showcasing Livermore’s charm and stunning views”.

Typically, marathon finishers would receive their medals the day of the race but according to an update posted to the event’s website, this year’s finisher medals will have to be shipped to runners due to “ongoing international tariff changes” which have led to the medals being “held at customs significantly longer than expected”.
