Weeks of laughs ahead at Bankhead Theater

SF Comedy Competition, Amy Sedaris, Funny Women of a Certain Age coming to Livermore

Livermore's Bankhead Theater is set to be filled with laughter in the coming weeks, with three high-profile events showcasing a range of comedians and ushering in Livermore Valley Arts' 2023-24 season.

The theater is set to host a portion of the 47th annual San Francisco Comedy Competition on Thursday (Sept. 21), which has historically seen the early work of comedians who go on to global fame, hosted by national headliner Dan St. Paul.

St. Paul's name is known far and wide, with a career so far that has seen him headline at top comedy clubs and open for well-known comedians including Jerry Seinfeld and Jay Leno, as well as musical acts including Ringo Starr and Hall & Oates, in addition to numerous TV appearances.

With the San Francisco Comedy Competition spanning four weeks, the Bankhead is set to host the second event of the three-day final round featuring the top five comedians who make their way through the elimination-style competition.

The laughs are set to continue in Livermore the following evening (Sept. 22) with Amy Sedaris in conversation with moderator and NBC Bay Area anchor and Tri-Valley resident Jessica Aguirre.

Sedaris is known for co-creating the cult-hit TV show and movie "Strangers with Candy" alongside Stephen Colbert, as well as her more recent Emmy-nominated show "At Home with Amy Sedaris" as well as appearances in TV hits ranging from "The Mandalorian" to "Bojack Horseman" -- in addition to authoring several bestselling books.

She is set to showcase her signature humor in a more intimate and personal setting on the Bankhead stage.

As LVA's comedy run continues, the Bankhead is set to see the return of Funny Women of a Certain Age, who were also featured last season. The troupe, created by longtime comedian Carole Montgomery, showcases a range of experienced comedians who all have one thing in common -- being a woman over the age of 50.

"Funny Women is a show straight from the unfettered mouths and uninhibited minds of the funniest, most daring, most experienced people in comedy: the women that have seen it all," event organizers said.
