Authorities have confirmed the identity of the driver who died after losing control of his SUV while reportedly speeding on Interstate 580 and crashing down an embankment east of Livermore last week.
The decedent was 21-year-old Fremont resident Masseyullah Khwaja, according to the Alameda County Coroner's Bureau.
Khwaja was killed in a wreck that occurred at about 7:15 a.m. Nov. 29 on eastbound I-580 east of North Flynn Road. According to the California Highway Patrol, a black Ford Edge was seen speeding at around 100 mph in the left-hand lane before veering hard to the right for unknown reasons and going off the roadway.
The SUV went down an embankment, ejecting the driver and coming to rest approximately 400 feet south of the southern edge of the freeway, according to the CHP.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the CHP. It took authorities some time to positively identify Khwaja as the driver because his driver's license was not immediately located on his body or in the vehicle. The circumstances of the solo-vehicle crash remain under investigation by the CHP.
