The Las Positas College Theater Arts Department is presenting a modern musical that plucks heart strings and guitar strings alike.
Onstage at the campus in Livermore during the next two weekends, “High Fidelity: The Musical” is a romantic comedy/drama adapted from the popular novel and cult classic movie. “With memorable characters and a rock ‘n’ roll score, this homage to music geek culture explores love, heartbreak and the power of the perfect soundtrack,” LPC officials said.
“I was a fan of the book and the movie, and I appropriately discovered the CD for this show in a discounted stack,” Dyan McBride, director of the LPC production, said in a statement. “I took it home, listened to the first song, ‘The Last Real Record Store on Earth,’ and thought I had found one of the best opening numbers I’d heard in a long time. I wasn’t wrong. This score and script continue to delight me as a director.”
“As for our production, we’ve got a great set of professionals on board to guide both our performance and tech students toward a killer show,” McBride added. “I also love the fact that we are looking at this production with fresh eyes: adding a little gender bending, celebrating diversity and championing body positivity. Our record store looks like the world of 2022.”
The musical version of “High Fidelity”, written for the stage by David Lindsay-Abaire with music by Tom Kitt and lyrics by Amanda Greene,” debuted on Broadway in 2006. It’s based on the well-known 1995 novel by Nick Hornby as well as the 2000 (non-musical) film adaptation by director Stephen Frears starring John Cusack, Lisa Bonet, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Jack Black.
The story follows Rob, the owner of a Brooklyn record store coming to grips with recently being dumped and looking back over his love life for the introspection needed to win her back.

The LPC production stars Darrien Cabreana as Rob and Natalie Hawkins as Laura, along with actors Mathew Glynn, Jasmine Guerrero, Lysander Sahagun, Tucker Price, Samantha Hixon and Liva Langer.
The show is directed by McBride, with music direction by Brian Allan Hobbs and choreography by Staci Arriaga. “High Fidelity: The Musical” is recommended for ages 13 and older due to language and themes.
Opening night is this Friday (March 18) at the Barbara F. Mertes Center for the Arts’ indoor main stage at Las Positas College in Livermore. Performances are set for 8 p.m. this Friday and Saturday, as well as March 24-26, along with a 2 p.m. matinee this Sunday.
