A Pleasanton Police Department officer is on leave while an internal investigation is underway, officials confirmed to the Weekly on Monday morning.

The officer was placed on administrative leave last month, after PPD administrators took notice of the officer’s social media posts. Details about the exact content of the posts are unclear but local news outlets reported that one post placed the officer at a rally for Donald Trump in Sacramento around Jan. 6, when rioters stormed the U.S. Capitol in a failed attempt to stop the certification process of the presidential election.

In a statement, Chief David Swing said he was “unable to comment on the status of any personnel investigation for reasons of confidentiality and the law.”

According to department policy, some forms of an officer’s speech are protected such as “an employee speaking as a private citizen, including acting as an authorized member of a recognized bargaining unit or officer associations, on a matter of public concern.”

However, PPD’s other standards of conduct apply while on the job and off, and failure to conform can be cause for disciplinary action.

Speech that “tends to compromise or damage the mission, function, reputation or professionalism of the Pleasanton Police Department or its employees” is prohibited, including “statements that indicate disregard for the law or the state or U.S. Constitution” and “expression that demonstrates support for criminal activity.”

With “strong levels of trust and support from the Pleasanton community,” Swing said he expects “our team to conduct themselves in a way that is reflective of the values of our organization and community.”

“Those values include professionalism, dignity and respect for all people and cultures. If someone’s actions are incongruent with those values we will take appropriate action to change behavior,” Swing said.

  1. Every company, school, and journalist can openly support BLM protests (even say they are “mostly peaceful” after 1.2 billion in damages).

But the second someone has another viewpoint, the thought police come out to censor. 1st amendment is fading very quickly, my friends.

  2. If you are working on a public position you must be very mindful of what you put out on social media. It is why it is called public. You have to mindful of others and, especially as a police officer, you have to make sure you serve everyone. You can’t take sides.

  3. People should really read the article and apply some critical thinking skills before jumping to conclusions that he was suspended for going to a trump rally. The Chief’s statement:

“Those values include professionalism, dignity and respect for all people and cultures. If someone’s actions are incongruent with those values we will take appropriate action to change behavior.”

    and the Mayor’s statement:

“We have no tolerance for some of the behaviors.”

were not accidents. Its pretty easy to infer that it isn’t about a trump rally, its about a lack of “dignity and respect for all people and cultures.” i.e. he was probably saying racist crap.

You trump people need to stop constantly trying to be victims in everything.

“Probably “ and “did” are too very different things. And the article clearly doesn’t provide answers to that. I’d rather judge on fact than guessing.
