California is a big state with some of the best small American cities around, including several in the Tri-Valley, according to a new survey by WalletHub.
The personal finance website’s 2019 Best Small Cities in America list selected cities with populations between 25,000 and 100,000, and “considered only the ‘city proper’ in each case, excluding cities in the surrounding metro area,” according to the report. More than 1,200 cities across the country were compared, based on five key factors: affordability, economic health, education and health, quality of life and safety.
Those five dimensions were then evaluated using 42 key indicators of livability, ranging from housing costs and quality of education to restaurants per capita. Each indicator was individually graded on a 100-point scale, with a score of 100 representing the conditions most favored among small-city residents.
Among the 50 best small cities to live in California that were named, Pleasanton made the #2 spot just behind Los Altos, and Dublin, Livermore and Danville also landed in the top 10 — taking 4th, 9th and 10th place — while San Ramon ranked #19. Wasco was ranked the state’s worst small city. Overall, the Tri-Valley cities ranked nationally in the 88th to 98th percentile.
Suburban living has been making a comeback, which the study’s authors attributed to the desire for a roomier, slower-paced lifestyle: “Small-city life can be best for those who appreciate more wiggle room, fewer degrees of separation and shorter commutes, to name just a few advantages.”
Some drawbacks, however, were also noted: “These little urban areas demand some tradeoffs, too, such as fewer restaurant options or shorter business hours.”

Pleasanton was a great city till all the racist moved here in the last ten to twenty years.
Just asking –
Which group of racists? Most of the people who have moved here over the last 10-20 years are not white people.
Or should I assume people of color can’t be racist – only white people are?
FYI – Racism, or prejudice, is human nature related, regardless of the color of your skin or shape of your eyes, etc.
The largest government sponsored home ownership program was launched by President George W. Bush soon after he was elected in 2000.
This was the a primary factor causing the financial crisis of 2008 ~2012.
I would hardly categorize “W” as a liberal
Calm down people…
Pleasanton seems to be very calm and peaceful.
like one said, its human nature. compared to most other places in California or the US in general, Pleasanton is considered very peaceful. In Pleasanton, the crime rates are 5 times below the American average.
I would say those who comment we should elect more Asians to the city council because their is a large Asian community now in Pleasanton or those who make statements like that’s white people food.
But since you brought it up how about people of color. A clearly racist phrase that………………..here it comes
Excludes white people. So I would be referring to those type of people.
Clear it up for ya.
So much negative energy in some of these ‘Rants”.
How about we all focus on being kind and learning what we can each do to create a more friendly and accepting community.
Right on Mr. Duman. We are blessed to live in an increasingly diverse community. We have much to learn from each other, not the least of which is tolerance.
Oh yes the D word. First off as I said maybe people of color as they describe themselves can include all people not just those who are not white. Again a racist term used by racist people.
Second. The D word. Diversity and racism go hand in hand simple fact.
Random equality rarely if ever happens. So it must be directed. The question I’m asking is how do you obtain diversity without practicing racism?
yeah, that’s right mr. Duman! we are extremely lucky! one of the safest and most diverse valleys in the US! half of the US still faces racial discrimination. what we face is minor to nothing compared to what people still face today in other areas of the US. we need to stop with complaining, and embrace what pleasanton already provides for us.
How do you obtain diversity without first practicing racism?
And yet we are building high density housing and zero lot line housing because it’s better?
Just asking…You mean all those liberals who wanted so much for everyone to own a home and then when the people of color moved into their neighborhoods they fled to the Tri-Valley? Ya, you’re right!
Hey JM
You see that is a half truth…sure Bush should have stopped the programs, but it didn’t start with him. It started with Bill Clinton and Barney Frank and all those NINJA loans that the government pressured the lenders to issue. The “white flight” to the Tri Valley started long before Bush became President
<We are blessed to live in an increasingly diverse community. We have much to learn from each other, not the least of which is tolerance.>
Who’s “we” Mr. Eggbeater?
The same people calling for “tolerance” (progressive activists and politicians) are anything but if you dare oppose their supposedly morally superior plans for more gun control (bans) for the law abiding, higher taxes, open borders, getting rid of fossil fuels, “free” health care, “income equality”, etc. Expect to be called “gun nuts”, “greedy”, “not caring about children”, “racists”, “deniers”, etc. None of these reactions/responses has anything to do with “learning”.
