Coroner identifies teen who drowned in San Ramon Valley High pool

Police investigation continues into death of 15-year-old Benjamin Curry

The San Ramon Valley High School freshman who drowned in the school's pool Tuesday has been identified as 15-year-old Benjamin Curry of Danville, according to the Contra Costa County Coroner's Office.

Police say the investigation is ongoing, and it may take weeks for authorities to have the full picture of what happened.

"There is no additional information and we are asking for a bit of patience to allow us to complete the investigation," Danville Police Chief Allan Shields said Wednesday. "As with any investigation, we start broadly and objectively and let the facts uncovered drive the direction and ultimately the determination as to the cause of the incident."

Curry was found unresponsive in the school's pool shortly before 2 p.m. Tuesday by a school staff member. The staff member tried to resuscitate Curry before paramedics arrived and took him to Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Walnut Creek, where he was later pronounced dead, according to Shields.

Students of SRVHS have set up a memorial outside of the school, which has grown exponentially with students leaving posters, drawings and mementos in honor of Curry.

“He was really funny, and he’d light everyone’s day up,” one student told DanvilleSanRamon.com after school Wednesday.

“As you can see (at the memorial wall) a lot of people loved him so yeah, he was really loved by everyone,” another student added.

San Ramon Valley High principal Jason Krolikowski says that the school currently has support staff in place to help students cope with their peer's death.

"If your child needs help dealing with her or his grief, please ask them to reach out to the support available at school. There will be a team of support staff on-site including school psychologists, school counselors, and SRVUSD support team members available to address the counseling needs of our students," Krolikowski said in a statement to parents and staff.

There will be a candlelight vigil tonight on the SRVHS football field from 8- 9 p.m., all are welcome to commemorate the life and mourn the loss of Curry.

Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Curry family and the community at large. My son Sam was actually in the pool when this happened. There are no words to express how awful this is.

How how how how how????? Not to intrude on the family and friends during their time of mourning - (i.e more than just morbid curiosity) how does a 15yr old drown in a pool? I fear so many things for my children, this is not one of them, should it be?....ahhh...too much.

Prayers to the family, friends, and community affected. Tragic.
