The Lucky supermarket in the Crow Canyon Place shopping center in San Ramon will permanently close its doors Sept. 28, a store manager confirmed.
Across the street, chain restaurant Chili’s closed last Tuesday.
The supermarket at 3181 Crow Canyon Place opened in 1980. According to reports, there was no explanation given for the store closure.
“Save Mart Supermarkets closes a store only after exhausting every alternative to draw more customers in to shop,” Woody Hunter, Save Mart’s VP of Coastal Division Operations, said in a statement. “Unfortunately, the slow economic recovery and the competition from other non-union retailers have kept this store from performing at the level required to sustain it.”
The shopping center is owned by San Jose-based Federal Realty.
Chili’s first opened the San Ramon restaurant in 1995.
“Our lease is expiring and the landlord wanted to go in another direction,” said Chili’s General Manager Dave Campos. “We’ll just have to move on and serve our customers in a different location. We’re going to be very sorry to leave San Ramon.”
Campos said his 48 employees will transfer to other Chili’s locations. Officials from CMG Financial, which owns the property, did not return calls for comment.
Leigh Boyd, economic and real estate consultant to the city of San Ramon, said Charles Schwab will take over the Chili’s location.

It doesn’t help that the traffic access in and out of that center was laid out by someone with the mental capacity of a scallion.
