Dublin Unified School District recently named Emerald High School health instructor Joy Sherratt as the 2024-25 Teacher of the Year.

Upon learning she was chosen, Sherratt said she was initially shocked and overwhelmed but also humbled by the honor.

“Education is not a ‘me’ profession. I truly believe in order to serve our students and community effectively, it takes collective effort and vision,” Sherratt told the Weekly. “I have so much pride in the work we ALL do each day to make DUSD a district where everyone is welcome, belongs, and has access to rigorous curriculum.”

Throughout her 16-year education career, she has served all but one year in Dublin. She began teaching in the city at Fallon Middle School, later coaching in the Tri-Valley Teacher Induction Program before moving to Dublin High School.

Sherratt now teaches at Emerald, as a health instructor to ninth-graders. She also serves as site coordinator of positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS) — a proactive, school-wide framework designed to improve student behavior and foster positive learning environments.

“Joy is a pillar of our Emerald community,” principal Lenni Velez said in a statement.

Her colleagues added that in addition to PBIS, Sherratt spearheads the school’s positive culture and climate.

“Joy’s passion and dedication to the school and building a positive culture have inspired others to become an active part of our culture,” colleagues said in a statement. “She truly walks the talk — her positive attitude, behavior and leadership are evident in everything she does.”

As a teacher, Sherratt sees her role as being supportive of students’ development regarding how to access, process and apply valid information to achieve their goals and contribute to the communities they live in.

All throughout, Sherratt has given particular attention to relationships with those around her.

“Building positive relationships with my students and colleagues where they feel like they belong, they matter, and are seen is first and foremost in everything I do,” she said.

Sherratt will now be considered by the Alameda County Office of Education for the countywide Teacher of the Year award.

The district also announced peer-nominated awards for School Site Teachers of the Year for the 2024-25 school year.

Winners include Nina Nulman at Amador Elementary School, Martha Brown at Dublin Elementary School, Irene Fong at James Dougherty Elementary School, Joshua Daniels at Frederiksen Elementary School, Samantha Carli-Robertson at John Green Elementary School, Pamela Petrini at Kolb Elementary School, Marisela Cervantes at Murray Elementary School, Katie Warne at Cottonwood Creek TK-8 School, Terri Sharbach at Fallon, Heather Smith at Wells Middle School, Jennifer Angel-Diaz at Dublin High, Qiongwei Wu at Valley High School and Sherratt at Emerald.

“It’s an honor to recognize this year’s District Site Teachers of the Year and our overall School District Teacher of the Year for their exceptional dedication to students, colleagues, and the broader school community,” DUSD Superintendent Chris Funk said in a statement. “Their passion, commitment, and unwavering support for student success make a lasting impact, and we are proud to celebrate their achievements.”
