Officers in Livermore arrested two people after a woman reported being tricked out of her jewelry over the weekend in what police described as a distraction theft.
According to the Livermore Police Department, officers responded Sunday afternoon to a theft at a business in the 1600 block of North Vasco Road. A 65-year-old Livermore woman told police that a woman in a car approached her and asked to pray together.
The woman held the victim’s hands and slipped replica “gold” jewelry onto her wrist, police alleged. After the car drove away, the victim realized her real gold bracelet was missing.
Officers later found the suspect vehicle near the 4000 block of Las Positas Road. Police arrested Cristina Dinu, 24, of Baltimore, on suspicion of grand theft. The driver, Fernando Miclescu, 29, of Renton, Washington, was also arrested.
Police warned residents to stay alert and avoid close contact with strangers. They advised people to keep their distance, not allow unknown individuals to touch them or place jewelry on them, and to walk away if a situation feels suspicious.
Anyone who believes they were targeted in a similar scam is urged to contact the Livermore Police Department and try to note the suspect vehicle and direction of travel.
