The Rotary Club of Pleasanton is getting set to host its 32nd annual Spirit Run later this month where residents and community members can either walk or run to raise money for Pleasanton students and other local charitable organizations.
According to a statement from Steve Van Dorn and Kathy Alameda, who are both co-chairs of this year’s run, last year’s event raised just under $50,000 for scholarships, charitable organizations and other Rotary Club projects and the organization hopes this year’s run is just as successful.
“Our annual Halloween Spirit Run is our largest fundraiser allowing us to continue supporting local nonprofit organizations, provide scholarships and fund our international projects,” Van Dorn and Alameda said in a joint statement to the Weekly.
Van Dorn and Alameda both serve as trustees on the Rotary Club of Pleasanton Foundation, which mainly handles the scholarships along with any charitable and cultural fundraising campaigns of the Rotary Club of Pleasanton, according to the Rotary Club’s website. The club itself has awarded more than $1 million in scholarships and community grants since 1993.
According to a press release announcing the event, the run is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Oct. 26 on Main Street in front of Workbench True Value Hardware located at 652 Main St.
Participants can register to either walk or run one of two routes through downtown Pleasanton and the surrounding residential neighborhoods — a 5K which totals 3.1 miles or a 10K which totals 6.2 miles.

Children between the ages of 5 and 12 can also sign up to participate in the Kid’s Challenge, which is a quarter-mile and a 100-yard dash that will both begin at 10 a.m. The Kid’s Challenge will be held on Main Street and registered kids will be set to receive a T-shirt and a medal.
All participants — both young and old — are also encouraged to dress up in their Halloween costumes while they either run or walk the routes. According to the Rotary club, awards and raffle prizes based on age groups will close out the morning activities.
“The race is a great opportunity to have fun and get some exercise with your family and friends while supporting our local community,” Van Dorn and Alameda said in the joint statement.
To register for the run, visit www.pleasantonrotary.org. Registration will also be available in person at Fleet Feet starting on Oct. 25. Participants can also register the morning of the race from 7-8:15 a.m. Oct. 26 in the parking lot adjacent to Workbench.
