Rite Aid is marking its final weeks in Pleasanton, with its store along Hopyard Road set to permanently shutter later this month amid the bankruptcy proceedings at the corporate level.

“Store Closing” and “Everything Must Go!” signs adorned the storefront on Thursday afternoon and the vast majority of shelves inside were empty or nearly bare, with remaining merchandise offered at clearance discounts. The shelving and other interior equipment and materials are also for sale as part of the wind-down.

Store employees said its final day is scheduled for Aug. 24, which will leave a prominent vacancy in the shopping center at the southeast corner of Hopyard Road and Valley Avenue that will now see Gene’s Fine Foods as its only large anchor store.

The future of the Rite Aid at 2819 Hopyard Road had been the subject of speculation for months amid the company’s difficulties nationwide. Rite Aid Corporation and its subsidiaries filed for voluntary Chapter 11 proceedings on May 5.

Pharmacy services ended at the Pleasanton store just over one week ago, and all customers were referred to the CVS Pharmacy at 6750 Bernal Ave. for their medication needs as of July 25. The Thrifty ice cream stand had already closed.

The Tri-Valley’s other remaining Rite Aid saw its pharmacy added to the closure list this week, with patients using the Alamo store being directed to the CVS Pharmacy on Danville Boulevard as of Monday (July 28).

Rite Aid corporate has not issued a press release on the bankruptcy proceedings and related fallout since May 15, when CEO Matt Schroeder addressed a deal with CVS and other companies to transfer pharmacy operations.

“A key priority for Rite Aid is to ensure that as many of our loyal customers as possible continue to receive the pharmacy services and care they require without interruption,” Schroeder said at the time. “These agreements ensure our pharmacy customers will experience a smooth transition while preserving jobs for some of our valued team members.”
