Authorities are investigating the death of a 27-year-old inmate who died in custody this week after he was found unresponsive at an Oakland courthouse.

The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office said Enrique Gonsalez-Cruz had a ligature around his neck when he was found Wednesday at the Wiley W. Manual Courthouse, but officials didn’t describe the ligature.

He was given life-saving measures and taken by ambulance to a hospital, where he died, the sheriff’s office said in a news release on Thursday.

Gonsalez-Cruz had been arrested last week by the California Highway Patrol’s Oakland division on suspicion of vehicle theft and possession of a stolen vehicle, and was booked into Santa Rita Jail on Friday night.

A forensic pathologist will determine the cause of death, and the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office has been notified, the sheriff’s office said. A report on the death will be submitted to the California Attorney General’s Office.
