“Bharatanatyam is characterized by precise movements, dynamic hand gestures and facial expressions. This art form breaks boundaries in exploring contemporary as well as traditional themes,” library officials said in announcing the free show.

An accomplished dancer in her native Mumbai who trains under Vaibhav Arekar and a teacher with degrees in performing arts, political science and philosophy, Abhishek founded the intergenerational dance institution Kshetram based in Livermore and Pleasanton in 2018, according to library officials.

“A direct response to her growing knowledge about dance, culture, appropriation, tradition and embodiment, Kshetram helps keep Indian traditions alive in California while also offering space to reflect on how Indian traditions continue to transform, evolve and grow with each new generation,” library reps said.

Abhishek also curates the ArtEchoes Series in the East Bay “to inspire and educate kids through live performances” and helps lead two dance festivals in the region, Varnam Salon and When Eyes Speak, according to her website.

Her upcoming Livermore performance is scheduled for Aug. 4 at 2 p.m. in the Civic Center Library Storytime Room. The free event is part of the library’s Authors & Arts series, which is sponsored by the Friends of the Livermore Public Library.
