Election forums
The Pleasanton Weekly is set to continue its series of election forums next week, with two in-person events to hear from candidates running in the November general election.
The forum for the Livermore Area Recreation and Park District Board of Directors will be held on Monday (Sept. 21) from 6-8 p.m. at the Cresta Blanca Room located at 4444 East Ave. in Livermore. Three at-large seats are up for grabs between seven hopefuls.
On Wednesday (Sept. 23), a candidate forum for the Pleasanton Unified School District is scheduled for 6-7:15 p.m. at 5758 W. Las Positas Blvd. in Pleasanton. Area 5 candidates will face off at the forum.

Community Service Day
The annual Community Service Day is returning this Saturday (Sept. 19) to Livermore, an occasion in which volunteers work on projects to enhance and beautify the city.
Projects this year include tree planting at city hall, painting at Hagemann Ranch and litter pickup along Northfront Road.
This year’s Community Service Day is set to begin at 8 a.m. with a breakfast and check-in at the Robert Livermore Community Center. At 9 a.m., volunteers are set to leave for their project site.
Community Service Day is hosted by the city of Livermore, LARPD and the Livermore Valley Joint Unified School District.

Fair board seats
The Alameda County Agricultural Fair Association, a nonprofit organization that puts on the annual Alameda County Fair, is currently accepting applications to fill two seats on its Board of Directors.
Board members, according to the nonprofit, serve four-year terms and participate in monthly meetings, as well as other committee meetings.
To qualify for the seats, candidates must permanently reside in Alameda County. According to the organization, applications for the two open positions must be submitted by next Saturday (Sept. 26). For more information on how to apply, visit www.alamedacountyfair.com.
Competition for Young Musicians
Young musicians have until Friday, Sept. 18, to submit their applications for the Livermore-Amador Symphony Association’s annual Competition for Young Musicians, which is set to take place early next month.
The winners of the competition, which takes place on Oct. 10 at the Mertes Center for the Arts at Las Positas College, will then go on to perform as soloists alongside the Livermore-Amador Symphony at the Bankhead Theater on Feb. 13, 2027 and will be awarded $750.
According to the symphony, the competition is open to all young instrumentalists and vocalists who live in Alameda County, Contra Costa County, the city of Tracy, or the city of Mountain House.

Mayor Hu’s young artists showcase
The city of Dublin is displaying the work of local student artists at the Frame Company and Art Gallery in Dublin from Sept. 19 through Oct. 3 as part of Mayor Sherry Hu’s inaugural Young Artists Showcase.
The showcase will be presented in recognition of National Arts in Education Week, and will celebrate the “creativity, imagination, and artistic achievements” of students from as young as kindergarten through high school.
“The showcase will culminate a week celebrating the importance of the arts in education by giving Dublin students an opportunity to exhibit their work, receive community recognition, and share their creative voices through the visual arts,” according to the city.
The opening reception takes place this Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m.
‘Ending Homelessness’ summit
Alameda County supervisors are scheduled to host an educational program in Livermore next Monday (Sept. 21) about homelessness in an effort to bring about solutions to the issue, county officials announced.
Dubbed “Tri-Valley Summit: Ending Homelessness Together”, the program will begin with a film screening of “Beyond the Bridge: A Solution to Homelessness”, which documents strategies being used successfully across the U.S. to house unsheltered folks.
A discussion will be held after the film to reflect on homelessness in the county, what is needed to address the issue and possibilities for the future, county officials said.
After the screening, Alameda County officials including those from the behavioral health department are set to give presentations. Also poised to join the conversation are local city mayors and city departments, non-profit service providers, businesses, and community members, county officials said in a statement announcing the event.
Free and open to the public, the event will be held at the Bankhead Theater in Livermore. Doors open at 8:45 a.m., followed by a reception in the lobby at 9 a.m. and programming from 9:30 a.m. to noon. County officials request RSVP by Saturday (Sept. 19).
The event is hosted by Alameda County supervisors David Haubert and Nate Miley.
Schaefer Ranch development meetings
The city of Dublin is hosting two community meetings this month that aim to provide residents with more information about a project that proposed to develop 19 single-family homes within the existing Schaefer Ranch neighborhood.
According to the city, the project applicant — Discovery Builders, Inc. — will be looking to construct 18 homes on a 6.87-acre site located at the western end of Dublin Boulevard, and one home on the western edge of Ridgeline Place.
The two meetings will take place next Wednesday (Sept. 23) at 6 p.m., and next Thursday (Sept. 24) at 7 p.m. Both meetings, which will take place remotely, will provide residents with the same information, including the project’s history and the development process.

‘Songs of the Heart’
The Pacific Chamber Orchestra is opening its 37th season this Saturday and Sunday with the “Songs of the Heart,” a program that celebrates “music that speaks directly to the human spirit”.
The first show will take place at the Del Valle Theatre in Walnut Creek starting at 3 p.m., while the second show will take place at the Bankhead Theater in Livermore. The second show will also start at 3 p.m.
According to the orchestra, the new season will feature new musicians who will bring their own artistic vision to the organization.
