The election to become the next Area 5 trustee on the Pleasanton school board heated up during the final days to qualify for the ballot, while no new candidates joined the race for City Council District 1 as the nomination deadline passed for good Wednesday afternoon.
With Trustee Justin Brown not seeking a second term, the candidacy nomination period was extended five days from last Friday’s initial deadline – when no names appeared on the list for the Area 5 election.
Three residents came forward after the weekend and made the cut before the final deadline: attorney and parent Thomas Choi, teacher and parent Karen Fletcher and business owner Brett Martinez.
Area 5, representing the southeastern side of Pleasanton Unified School District, will be the only contested school board election Nov. 3 – incumbent Trustee Laurie Walker is unopposed for northeast Area 2.
The other Pleasanton election to see a filing extension was City Council District 1, with incumbent Jeff Nibert not running. No new candidates came forward in the five extra days, solidifying the contest between former councilmember and current Zone 7 Water Agency Director Kathy Narum and former congressional candidate Vin Kruttiventi.
Already confirmed for the ballot last Friday were the two other Pleasanton city election matchups: incumbent Mayor Jack Balch against termed-out Councilmember Julie Testa for the mayoral post and entrepreneur Reena Gupta against former PUSD trustee Jamie Yee for City Council District 3.
