Holiday drives

The Livermore Area Recreation and Park District collected two-dozen 40-gallon bins of food and two truckloads of donated toys as part of the organization’s Holiday Food Drive and Toys for Tots Toy Drive this holiday season.

“We’re really grateful for the community’s support,” Jill Kirk, LARPD’s community services manager, said in a press release. “The amount of food and toys donated was incredible, and we hope it makes a big difference for families and kids this holiday season.”

LARPD said the food was delivered to Tri-Valley Haven to support individuals and families experiencing food insecurity while the toys were sent to children across the region through the U.S. Marine Corps Toys for Tots program.

According to the website, the campaign received nearly 470 donors. The Livermore Amador Symphony Association received the most donations with 40 while the SPARC Theater in Livermore received the highest amount of donation at nearly $11,000. The Embarcadero Media Foundation finished in fourth place with $5,121 in donations.

ONE dashboard

The city of Pleasanton introduced a new online dashboard, allowing residents to monitor the progress of ONE Pleasanton, the city’s five-year strategic plan.

“The new dashboard enhances public access by giving the community a clear view of the actions and outcomes being achieved through the Strategic Plan,” City Manager Gerry Beaudin said in a press release.

The plan’s goals include fiscal sustainability, optimizing the organization, investing in the environment, safeguarding the city and community development. The dashboard highlights the progress made toward achieving each goal and ongoing implementation efforts

According to the dashboard, 66% of the 47 strategies to achieve those goals are on track for completion and 13% have already been completed.

Former NASA astronaut virtual talk

The Sustainability Lens, a youth-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit that promotes climate action among their peers, is hosting a talk this Sunday (Jan. 4) with former NASA astronaut and U.S. Air Force Colonel Dr. Cady Coleman at the Pleasanton Public Library.

“Dr. Coleman spent over 180 days in space across two space shuttle missions and a six-month expedition aboard the International Space Station (ISS), where she served as Lead Robotics and Lead Science Officer,” according to a press release from the Sustainability Lens.

During the event, which is set to begin at 11 a.m., Coleman will discuss her book “Sharing Space: An Astronaut’s Guide to Mission, Wonder, and Making Change” along with other topics such as sustainability on earth, women in STEM and the “importance of leadership, teamwork, and mission-driven work.”

According to the nonprofit, the event will be open to the public. Coleman will join virtually while audience members gather in person at the library. In-person attendees will also get a chance to enter a raffle at the event and win one of three copies of Colemans’s book.
