The ax dropped on one of the Tri-Valley’s more unique recreational game venues this month, as Limitless Axes & Ales closed its founding location in Pleasanton for good after nearly five years.
The company’s Limitless Escape Games remains open next door in Valley Plaza Shopping Center, as does its original escape room in Livermore, but Limitless leadership decided the best path forward for its ax-throwing brand was only with its lounges in communities to the east, according to CEO and owner Michael Hill.
“Yes, our Pleasanton axe-throwing location has officially closed with the conclusion of our lease,” Hill told the Weekly by email Friday. “Pleasanton was our flagship store and a phenomenal experience for us, but we’ve since chosen to focus on other locations that align more closely with our brand vision.”
“Our Stockton venue and our nearly-open Brentwood location allow us to offer the full experience we’ve always aimed for — including full bar service, live music and larger event spaces for hosting big groups,” Hill said. “These locations are where we see the future of Limitless Axes & Ales.”
The Pleasanton ax-throwing lounge at 1809 Santa Rita Road, Suite A, officially closed on Sept. 1, Hill told the Weekly.
Limitless publicly confirmed the news via its Instagram this past weekend. “Pleasanton was our very first Limitless Axes & Ales and will always be special to us — the community welcomed us with open arms and gave us a phenomenal experience,” company reps said in part.
Hill and wife Brook, who had already been operating their escape room brand in Livermore, debuted their Limitless Axes & Ales concept with the Pleasanton location in October 2020. A family trip to New York introduced the couple to recreational ax-throwing, and “the experience was so exhilarating that they knew they had to bring it back home,” according to the Limitless website.
The Hills received approval in September 2019 for their permit, which went all the way to the Pleasanton City Council over initial concerns about the safety of ax-throwing and mixing that with alcohol sales. But it would be over a year until they opened, with the COVID-19 pandemic and associated impacts contributing to the time it took to convert the old Monument Car Parts tenant spaces in Valley Plaza for the lounge.
Limitless Escape Games moved in next door in mid-2023, giving the Hills a third escape room to join those operating in Livermore and Stockton. The Pleasanton escape room in Suite C at 1809 Santa Rita Road is unaffected by the ax lounge closure, Hill said.
“We’re still proud to be part of the Pleasanton community. Our Limitless Escape Games, located right next door, remains open and is doing great. We look forward to serving Pleasanton customers there for many years to come,” he told the Weekly.
