The clock seems to be ticking on Pleasanton’s lone Rite Aid amid the corporation’s bankruptcy proceedings, but for now the store and its pharmacy on Hopyard Road remain open with no firm closure date set.

Many shelves were bare – while others were only half-stocked – and the Thrifty ice cream stand appeared closed for good inside the Rite Aid around lunchtime last Friday. No customers were in sight and just one employee, the checkout cashier, was working on the retail floor at that time.

Staff at the Pleasanton store have said no final date has been announced, but they declined further comment. Notices posted on the door only refer to the end of the Rite Aid Rewards program (May 6) and the last day the company will honor gift cards or accept returns or exchanges (June 4).

So far, the retail and pharmacy store at 2819 Hopyard Road has not shown up on any Rite Aid closure list, including the one circulating across national media on Tuesday. Nor has it been linked to any acquisition such as the deal announced May 15 to save more than 1,000 locations in Washington, Oregon and Idaho.

Rite Aid Corporation and its subsidiaries filed for voluntary Chapter 11 proceedings on May 5 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of New Jersey, with representatives saying they were pursuing “a strategic and value-maximizing sale process” for remaining assets.

“For more than 60 years, Rite Aid has been a proud provider of pharmacy services and products to our loyal customers,” CEO Matt Schroeder said in a press release at the time. “While we have continued to face financial challenges, intensified by the rapidly evolving retail and healthcare landscapes in which we operate, we are encouraged by meaningful interest from a number of potential national and regional strategic acquirors.”

“As we move forward, our key priorities are ensuring uninterrupted pharmacy services for our customers and preserving jobs for as many associates as possible,” he added.

Should the Rite Aid store in Pleasanton close, it will leave a sizable hole in the shopping center at the southeast corner of Hopyard Road and Valley Avenue that also features Gene’s Fine Foods and Porky’s Pizza Palace among its major occupants. Another popular tenant, Sozo Sushi, shuttered this year but work is underway for a new Katsu Me restaurant to take over that space.
