A teacher from Alameda Unified and an educator from Oakland Unified last week were named county Teachers of the Year, a distinction that means they will now compete for the statewide award that will be handed out later this month.
Kevin Gorham, an AP government and economics teacher at Encinal Junior & Senior High in Alameda, and special needs teacher Stephanie Taymuree of Oakland’s Redwood Heights Elementary received the honors at the 28th annual Alameda County Teacher of the Year awards ceremony in Castro Valley on Oct. 5.
Mario Hurtado represented the Pleasanton Unified School District in the countywide contest. Now a vice principal at Amador Valley High, Hurtado was working as a U.S. history, economics and leadership teacher at Village High School when he was selected as PUSD Teacher of the Year in the spring.
All 18 district winners in Alameda County were recognized at last week’s ceremony, which was attended by close to 300 people.
