The Lady Dons attended the Western States Water Polo tournament last weekend and took third place in the Varsity B bracket, losing only to eventual champion St. Ignatius of San Francisco. The Amador squad won four of their five games in dominating fashion and held their own against the St. Ignatius squad, who were originally placed in the Varsity A bracket, but were moved to the Varsity B bracket due to a scheduling conflict.

Amador opened the tournament with a big win over Oakdale 12-1. The first game was highlighted by the standout goaltending of Alexa Davis and Caitlin Desmet.

In their second game Amador faced a very physical Kingsburg team. After an even first half, the Lady Dons took control in the second half to finish with a 10-6 win. Marina Allen led the team offensively with 5 goals. Allie Glogovac added 2 more. Heidi Reddig, who had three steals, spearheaded the defense. The wins over Oakdale and Kingsburg placed Amador in first place in their bracket.

On day 2 AVHS met another bracket winner in Atwater High. The Dons dominated from the start and finished with a 16-2 victory. Jenn Docto had 6 goals and Nicole Pihal added to lead the offense.

Amador then played St. Ignatius for the right to go to the championship game. It was a battle from the start. Both teams tried to impose their will on the other but the difference maker was the St. Ignatius goalie who made several highlight reel saves to preserve the 10-5 win.

In the third-place game, Amador faced Sandy High from Oregon. The girls were determined to finish strong and jumped on top early in the first half. The Amador defense did not allow the Sandy High offensive space to breathe. The potent Amador attack was led by 4 goals from Allen who led the team to a 12-2 win and third place in the tournament.

Foothill football climbs to ninth in state

After a harder than expected 31-6 win over last place Livermore High, the Falcons varsity football team climbed to number 9 in the California high school football rankings as measured by maxpreps.com.

Despite the wild homecoming game crowd at Livermore High School that spurred the Cowboy defense, the Falcons scored the first touchdown of the game late in the first quarter after a muffed punt gave the Falcons the ball on the Cowboyís side of midfield. A two-yard TD run by Rob Andrews capped off the short field drive. After the kickoff the Falcon defense held firm forcing the Cowboy offense to a 3 and out. The offense then struck quickly on a 65-yard pass from senior quarterback Josh Mendonca to receiver Jordan Johnson up the right sideline.

After allowing a Cowboy touchdown drive, Foothill ended the half with a 32-yard field goal from Adam Miles to make the score 17-7 at halftime.

The Falcons took control of the game in the second half not allowing Livermore to taste the end zone. The offense took the opening kick right down the field and scored on a second TD reception, this time from 15 yards out, by Johnson to make the score 24-7. Senior running back Stephen Yoshida finished the scoring with a 2-yard run later in the 3rd quarter.

The defense showed why opponents average les than 8 points scored per game. Jeff Randall and Eric Roeser combined for a key QB sack in the 4th quarter to preserve the second half shutout.

BUSC U17 Black win division

The BUSC U17 Black sewed up first place in their division with a 3-2 victory over the Patterson Palmeiras. Joey Halim and Tim Gaisor teamed up to score the first goal five minutes into the contest. Halim made one of his patented runs down the right side, and once the defense committed to him he sent a pinpoint cross to Gaisor who put the ball in the back of the net for a goal. Patterson answered late in the first half for a 1-1 halftime score.

In the second half, Brent Cambra, who had a strong game at sweeper, lofted a ball from midfield into the penalty box. In the ensuing scramble, Halim won the battle for the loose ball and blasted the ball past the Patterson keeper to give BUSC a 2-1 lead. After Patterson answered to tie the score, Willie Berger scored on a header off a rebound from a shot by Matt Carlucci for the final goal and the win. Trevor Dawson and Jay Guilmart led the BUSC defense keeping the Patterson team from mounting any sustained pressure for most of the game.
