Congressman Jerry McNerney (D-Pleasanton), who got his political start here at Pleasanton’s Farmers Market, plans to move to San Joaquin County so that he can seek re-election in his newly-configured 11th Congressional District that will no longer include the city where he lives.
Maps for the 11th District are being redrawn to accommodate population shifts recorded in the 2010 Census.
McNerney launched his political career one Saturday morning at the Farmers Market in downtown Pleasanton and has been a highly-visible part of the community. First elected to Congress in 2006, he was re-elected last November.
State law allows candidates to seek congressional seats anywhere in California no matter where they live. However, those seeking congressional offices in the state must also live in California.
“(But) after spending so much time in San Joaquin County, it truly is my home,” he said. “That’s why I’m planning to move my residence to San Joaquin County and put down even more roots in this community. I’m going to continue to fight for San Joaquin County and East Contra Costa County.”
“This area has a resilient spirit, a strong sense of community and a great future ahead,” he added. “I’m deeply committed to this area and excited to continue working for San Joaquin and East Contra Costa Counties.”
McNerney said he currently represents a majority of the voters in the newly-constituted 11th District.
During his time as the representative for the area that will be his new district, McNerney said he has led the effort to bring a new veterans medical facility and nursing home to San Joaquin County, wrote a new law to improve treatment for service members suffering from traumatic brain injuries and helped secure millions of dollars in funding for local infrastructure projects, including for the Port of Stockton and Highway 4 in Brentwood.
He has also held many public meetings in that San Joaquin County/East Contra Costa County region.

This is a huge lose for us in Pleasanton/San Ramon/ Danville.
Jerry is a fantastic Congressman and he was always a strong
advocate of local issues important to us all. We are going
to miss Jerry and his hard work for us all. We wish him
the best in the new District 11 and know he will continue to
do a great job for the San Jaoquin and East Contra Costa.

Thank goodness. Representative McNerney was so sensible and moderate and responsible and BORING. Let’s hope our next rep can be a Michele Bachmann clone, a real Tea Party animal! Bring on the insanity!
You know there are reasonable positions between the extreme right Tea Party position you like to foment about and the extreme left socialistic position you espouse.
I do hope we can surface centrist candidates – ones that represent fiscal responsibility and a reasonable amount of social progressiveness – a position that encompasses many of the independents in the area.

Absolutely there are reasonable positions taken by the Tea Party. But I’m going to refrain from presenting a long list and let you think it through…. First, there is…. C’mon! Quick! Quick! Somebody think of one. Okay, don’t think. Look up Joe Walsh and list some of his positions — especially on child support.
I suspect that Stark is going to be strongly encouraged to retire as he has little hope of getting re-elected in his newly reconstituted region.
Let me help you formulate your thoughts, ‘yet another’….regarding the Tea Party positions that you disdain:
Fiscal responsibility
Personal responsibility
Family values
Smaller govt.
Less govt interference in our personal lives
Maybe you can’t understand or support those positions—if so, I’m sorry for you and your children.
Hey Steve, can you point out ANY Teabagger who actually practices these positions in congress or the senate?
The want to cut Social Security and Medicare (programs I have been paying into since I was 18) and refuse to increase taxes on the top 2% earners. This will actually create a “tax” on the middle class as more of our income will have to go towards medical and basic living expenses instead of stimulating the economy.
The reason the country is in the fiscal position we are is because of the former President and his croonies spending money like it was going out of style.
Please pay attention and stop watching Faux News.

Let me enjoy a couple hours with the thought “Clueless McNerney will no longer be my Congressman”. Then the bubble will burst as I come to grips with the liklihood that my Congressman will be Pete Stark, the craziest loon in the House. If Stark retires, all the loons that live on the other side of the hills will vote another left-wing loon. The only question is will the new person be crazy like Nancy Pelosi, crazy like Barbara Lee, or crazy like Zoe Lofgren.
In addition to cornering the morket on family values (e.g. Palin’s family or Pete Walsh’s 100+ grand unpaid child support payments) and interference in people’s personal lives (e.g., wiretaps, internet surveillance, attack on right to abortion), we’ve also got anything that smacks of fascism dead center on our wall. We’re coming to the resuce American!!!

Might be a little tougher for you to get elected out in the Central Valley, illegal immigrants can’t vote (at least they are not suppossed to), the Govt Unions are not as strong and people have more sense than the socialists and commies who walk Tri-Valley.

It will end when the Governement Sector Employees like Yet Another Teacher stop feeling sorry for themselves and stop thinking that they they are entitled sponge off the REAL tax payers and do something besides cry about their lots is life…Something like finally educate our children who continue to fall behind the rest of the world becasue ther are being taught by people to dumb, or too lazy to contribute. Too bad its the poorest “people of color” who are sucked into their pity and end up suffering the most, for their lact of ambition and charecter. Thank God for private school and rich “middle class white” people who are still paying MORE than their fair share of salaries that Yet Another Teacher could never make in the private sector, because in the private sector, you actually have accountability.

I think you’re fooling nobody but yourself. The Tea Party is deeply racist; one of their unstated objections to Obama is that he’s a black man. Where do you think all of this “show us Obama’s birth certificate” nonsense comes from?

YAT, have you actually attended tea party events, or have you just watched MSNBC’s coverage of them? The two experiences are not even remotely similar.
If you do happen to see racism at a tea party event, it is very likely from tea party crashers who just want to discredit the movement. There are usually far more minorities at tea party events than there were at, for example, the Wisconsin protests.
I’m a waitress at a private club where I serve rich white people. Some of them give me decent tips, and I feel sometimes because they let me serve them that I’m one of them. Because I don’t have many skills, am poorly educated, and can’t spell very well, I’ll probably never be rich. But I can always dream. And while I serve the wealthy, kiss up to my bosses, and kick down at my work colleagues, I’m able to live the dream, however much of an illusion it might be, that I can be their equal some day. Tea Party Rocks, because the wealthy who I serve seem to like it. It takes working peoples’ attention away from the disparity of wealth in this country, and how that increasing disparity will inevitably, to use Paul Krugman’s term, culminate in us being a banana republic. But kowtowing waiters and waitresses to serve the rich and kiss up and kick down will even be needed then. And I can continue on with my illusion, no my delusion, or who knows, whatever the heck it is. And while I pursue this delusion, nuts to ya. I only care about myself, because somewhere along the line my parents and educators failed me, and I continue to fail myself and disappoint those around me.
Ah the Tea Partiers…the masters of over-the-top defensiveness.
