The city of Pleasanton is ready to welcome its newest mayor and council members — albeit from a distance — during a virtual ceremony Tuesday evening.

Councilwoman Karla Brown will be elevated to mayor and take the oath of office now that her election victory and the rest of the city’s election results have been certified.

The online swearing-in ceremony, emblematic of the meeting norms for 2020 amid the COVID-19 pandemic, will include two new — but recognizable — leaders joining the City Council: outgoing Pleasanton Unified School District Trustee Valerie Arkin and city Planning Commissioner Jack Balch.

Arkin and Balch finished first and second, respectively, in a seven-candidate race for a pair of four-year terms on the council. Brown, who was termed off the council this year, won the two-year mayor’s term against four other candidates on the ballot.

Tuesday’s meeting will also see Councilman Jerry Pentin offer final remarks as he leaves the dais. Pentin, who is terming out, finished as the runner-up in the mayoral election.

Outgoing Mayor Jerry Thorne is not scheduled to appear, as he continues his recovery from recent surgery. Thorne, who also termed out this year, previously announced that the Nov. 17 meeting would be his final one leading the city because of the pending operation.

The oath-of-office ceremony is scheduled to lead off Tuesday’s regular council meeting, starting at 7 p.m. via Zoom, airing live on TV29 and livestreaming via tri-valleytv.org or the city’s YouTube page. For access links, visit here.

* The council is set to conduct the public hearing it postponed two weeks ago to review the Planning Commission’s prior approval of plans to redesign the Public Storage facility on Stanley Boulevard.

The proposal calls for tearing down seven existing storage buildings and office space, and constructing a three-story storage building, a separate one-story storage building and an office site. The applicant has also asked the city to reduce the affordable housing fees associated with the project.

Balch will have to recuse himself from the council’s discussion because he was on the Planning Commission when the Public Storage item came forward, voting to approve the project along with the commission majority.

* Council members will ratify their own assignments on various regional boards and commissions for 2021, as well as select the next vice mayor.
