A bill requiring the safer use of pesticides in schools will be making its way to the Governor announced Thursday.
The bill, authored by Senator Mark DeSaulnier who represents Pleasanton, provides more stringent guidelines on the use of toxic pesticides.
“Our young people deserve to be protected from harmful pesticides when they are at school,” Senator DeSaulnier said. “Families should be assured that their children are not exposed to pesticides unless absolutely necessary. SB 1405 will promote the usage of preventative measures at school sites that can lessen the need for toxic pesticides. If pesticides must be used on campuses, employees should receive the proper training to apply them in the safest manner possible.”
SB 1405 requires school sites to report all pesticide use to the California Department of Pesticide Regulation. Currently, the law requires only professional applicators to report the use.
In addition, the bill requires anyone using pesticides on school sites to to undergo an annual training on integrated pest management and the safe usage of pesticides.
According to the National Academy of Sciences, children are more susceptible to chemicals than adults — an estimated 50% of lifetime pesticide exposure occurs at a young age.
This is DeSaulnier’s third attempt to regulate the use of pesticides on school sites. He previously authored SB1157 in 2010 and SB 394 in 2011.

In California, the Governor DOES NOT need to sign anti-pesticide restrictions that somehow ensure the safer use of pest control products in schools. The screeching-monkeys who demand these restrictions are WRONG ! Pest control products represent NO THREAT to children since they are scientifically-safe and cause no harm. Leading scientific experts like Dr Katherine von Stackelberg say they would NOT hesitate to let their children play on a lawn where lawn care products have been used as long as the products were applied according to label directions. According to another leading expert, Dr James S Bus, there is NO evidence that common lawn herbicides like 2,4-d cause cancer or any health problems in children. Dr Bus has also stated that there is NO regulatory agency in the world that regards pest control products like 2,4-D as a threat to children’s health. According to yet another leading expert, Mr William Jordan, Deputy Director, Office of Pesticide Programs, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency ( EPA ), parents do not need to worry as long as a pest control product is used correctly. The EPA has spent a lot of time looking at products like 2,4-D, and has concluded that it is SAFE FOR KIDS. Allegations about the imaginary danger to children are totally false, and are untrue mis-representations designed to alarm and enrage the public for mere money and profit given to anti-pesticide & environmental-terrorist organizations. In fact, prohibition actually harms children and represents a danger to children ! Because of anti-pesticide prohibition, children are forced to play in #@!!% dangerous and pest-infested garbage dumps ! In essence, children are at risk from dangerous playing surfaces which are created by #@!!% pesticide bans ! For example, in Hamilton, Ontario, children cannot play on the grass because of the proliferation of weeds. In jurisdictions like Wallingford, Connecticut, there is a fear of litigation with pesticide-free playing surfaces. Clovers and dandelions have been attracting bees … what if children get stung and what if they are allergic ? Clover attracts bees that can harm children and kill people. Clover attracts killer bees. For people who are allergic to bee stings, a sting may trigger a dangerous anaphylactic reaction that is potentially deadly. Additionally, honey bee stings will release pheromones that prompt other nearby bees to attack. No one wants this #@!!% dangerous ban nonsense that places children at risk ! Pest control products are SCIENTIFICALLY-SAFE, and will NOT CAUSE HARM TO CHILDREN, ADULTS, ANIMALS, OR THE ENVIRONMENT. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with these pesticides provided they are used properly and the kids don’t eat the grass or eat their lunch on it. It is similar kinds of harsh legislation by the %$### state that suggests we wash fruits and vegetables clean of pesticides.
Without these draconian measures by the *&^#@ state, we wouldn’t have hucksters charging us more money at the grocery store for “organic” foods. I mean, really, “organic” vs. “inorganic”?????
