The Pleasanton-based enterprise software company Workday is transitioning from having two co-CEOs to just one leader at the helm as one of its founders steps into an advisory position, officials announced in recent days.

Carl Eschenbach has served as co-CEO of the company since 2022 alongside Aneel Bhusri, co-founder and chair of the company’s board of directors. That changed starting Feb. 1, with Eschenbach being named as the single executive leading the company.

“Workday has never been in a stronger position, thanks in large part to the impact Carl has made in his first year,” Bhusri said in a statement on Jan. 31. “From the start, he has embodied the company’s core set of values and I am confident that he is the right person to help Workday scale and lead us into our next phase of growth.”

Bhusri will continue to serve as chair of the company’s board, and will now serve as Eschenbach’s strategic advisor, with a focus on innovation and the company’s future direction.

“Working alongside Aneel for the last year has been a highlight of my career, and has solidified my belief in the opportunities ahead for Workday,” Eschenbach said in Wednesday’s announcement. “I’m honored to serve as CEO of this incredible company, and to continue working with our world class leadership team and more than 18,000 Workmates around the globe to build one of the most enduring software businesses of our time.”

Workday officials pointed to a number of milestone’s under Eschenbach’s leadership alongside Bhusri since 2022, with the company now contracting with more than 65 million users, more than 50% of Fortune 500 companies, expanding services to the retail and hospitality industries, and hosting the company’s largest-yet Workday Rising conference last fall with close to 20,000 attendees.

The leadership change went into effect on Feb. 1 with the start of the company’s 2024-25 fiscal year.
