When Do Campaign Signs Have to Be Removed
Around Town, posted by Dave, a resident of the Birdland neighborhood, on Jan 21, 2013 at 5:54 pm

California requires election signs to be taken down within 10 days of any election. However, what is the penalty for not removing the signs. The cantankerous, ill-natured, nasty, obnoxious, offensive, rude, surly, unfriendly, unpleasant (take your pick!) Pete Stark still has his sign up facing 580 West leaving Pleasanton. How do we get this reminder of an out of touch (and finally defeated) politician removed?

I gather up old political signs and burn them on spare the air days.

Anybody notice how windy it's been in the afternoons of the recent "spare the air days"? Kinda makes you wonder if these Air Resources Board tax-eaters know what they're doing.

We all greatly appreciate your contributions, Arroyo. Thank you for your thoughtfulness. You're a real treasure to the community. And a kindly reminder for us all: Littering laws are an infringement on our basic Constitutional liberties, or, in the words of one of our patriotic Koch brothers, "Pollution=Freedom"

Actually, I really did want to know if there is any kind of enforcement for campaign signs still up after 10 days.

Apparently, the same bureaucrats that enforce the Spare the Air violations (at the tune of over 2.4 million a year) also enforces the political sign laws. When i see Stark's signs, it makes me smile, knowing he's retired in his home state of Maryland, where he can no longer hurt working Californians.

By the way, today is a no burn day---it's breezy and raining outside at noon in PTown. Maybe these idiots use the Farmers Almanac to plot their intrusions on our rights.

Calvin,

I'm thrilled that I brightened your day. I want you to know that I'm lighting an extra Presto Log tonight in your honor.

Dave,

There's a law on the books regarding a time limit following an election for removal of political signs. However, it's rarely enforced unless 100's of signs remain around the area. If you want that Stark sign removed, I suspect you're going to have to remove it and take it home for a historical keepsake.

Arroyo,

Thanks for your feedback. I suspect you are right regarding the signs and their removal. It's a tempting thought to have my own historical keepsake, but I think I'll pass! I'll just continue to chuckle as I go by the sign each day. Thanks
