Is anyone else underwhelmed by the outlets?

Original post made by Michelle, Mohr Park, on Dec 13, 2012

I visited the outlets this week for the first time and I was totally underwhelmed. The traffic has died way down which really surprised me since we are at peak of the holiday shopping season. There were a few stores where we found outlet type pricing, but we found more situations where the prices at these so called outlets were higher than at the actual non outlet stores. A couple of examples.....American Eagle outlet was selling a purse size perfume set for $20 (the suggested retail price) that you can buy at the Stoneridge American Eagle non outlet store for $12. The Juicy Couture store was selling silver charm bracelets for $10 more than you can buy the same exact bracelet at the San Francisco mall non-outlet location on Market Street. And at the actual store in the city, they'll gift wrap for you and everything else that you won't get at the outlet.

I hope it does work out, but the parking lot was half empty when we left during in the evening at about 7:00. We had no problem finding a space near the entrance when we arrived in the afternoon. Not good signs in my book.

I was planning on dropping by sometime out of curiosity, but in reviewing the outlet's website in advance, I didn't see a single store that really interested me. Lot's of "designer fashion" stores and over 20 shoe stores. I decided to pass on going there. Granted, I'm probably not the sort of customer they have in mind. But if the outlet has so little appeal to an "average Joe" like me with not even a single of their stores having any special attraction to me, then I have to wonder how this outlet will fare once the novelty wears off. Don't know if it's my imagination or not, but it seems that when I drive by on the freeway the outlet's parking lots are fairly empty considering that we're in the middle of the biggest shopping season of the year.

As a typical guy who hates shopping all I can say to the outlets is Amazon and eBay, suckers. If you don't have killer deals on things I really need then forget it.

As a woman who buys few clothes, but those being well made with a classic style (typically Talbots) I will not be buying at the Outlets. They closed their store in the mall, but manufacturers typically produce a different line (Talbots does) for their outlet market than their store market. Now I'll be going up to Walnut Creek the 2 times a year I shop for clothes.

I just got back from my 1st visit to the new mall. I must admit that I am very impressed with the quality of all of the stores I wandered into. Will definately be a repeat customer.
