Why is that we see such a high turnover in the restaurants and shops downtown? I would argue at least part of the reason is that there's not enough good reasons for people to go there.
Last night, we went to Web Link in Livermore - it was packed on a Wednesday night - not with drunks but with young people having a nice dinner and drinks. They were having a good time and spending money. More importantly, the downtown looked alive. I've been to Pleasanton on a Wednesday night - it's a ghost town.
It's not just Livermore that has a sports bar - you can find great sports bars in most downtown areas - Palo Alto, Mountain View, Danville, Lafayette to name a few.
I talk to parents all the time who are asking for the same thing - a family-friendly place where you can get good food and some great drinks - there's clearly a market.
Let's rethink some of the restrictions we have and think differently about what goes into downtown. We already have a Quiznos, it's time to get a sports bar.
