Day of Service events in Pleasanton, Livermore

Original post made by Grace, Highland Oaks, on Jan 15, 2009

This coming Monday, MLK Jr. day, has been called a national Day of Service for interested citizens to volunteer and helping their communities -- the first step in an ongoing commitment and spirit of renewal. I know there are a lot of cynics out there, but it sounds like a good idea to me, for those who might have the day off and can find the time. Are there any events planned? The website I checked didn't show any closer than Oakland or Hayward.

Pleasanton Weekly, community groups -- anything you know of where people can quickly organize to help out locally?

I saw this announcement, too, but haven't seen any media coverage locally. I can't believe that there are no events around the area to pitch in for the environment or seniors or others in need of a hand!

The only listing for January 19 service opportunities in Pleasanton on was for blood donors for the American Red Cross. After signing up for that and having a confirmation call, I was disappointed to get a later call informing me the Blood Bank was closing for the holiday. I like the concept of making MLK Jr. Day a day of national service -- of "Rebuilding America Together" -- and hope our community agencies will begin planning now what volunteer opportunities they will list in 2010. Perhaps our city council could help make this happen. Pleasanton missed a chance to join in a nationwide effort to make a difference.

Thanks for posting and the feedback, JL. I was really hoping that something would materialize where people in Pleasanton could pitch in and join the national effort... I know some might ask "why don't YOU organize something if you're the one suggesting it?", but I don't currently have any ties with volunteer organizations, although I'm interested in becoming part of one.

I think it's a great idea that the incoming president is asking for citizen participation, both in the political arena and on a more personal, local level -- fellow human being to fellow human being. I know that the national day of service on MLK day is a symbolic effort, hopefully the beginning of a year of volunteerism and compassion... and beyond.

Hi -- There wasn't much organized here in Livermore either, but there is a no-hosted "Clean-Up Your Community" event that I registered for. I'm going to one of my favorite walking paths and am planning to pick up trash for awhile today. I agree that it would be great if more organized events were planned. I agree that we should see if we can get our communities more involved before next year.
