This is a waste of time. It doesn't tell us which is the better business. Only which business can get out the most ballots. One customer can vote countless times. Newer, smaller businesses are unnoticed.

I agree - nothing but a poorly structured popularity contest.

Many years ago before I knew better, I was looking for a new dentist. I received a postcard from a dentist where it advertised that he was the winner of the Pleasanton Reader's Choice Award. I figured that had to mean he was good, right?

It turned out that this guy's office was dreary, his methods were antiquated, and he had a different hygienist every time I went for a checkup because they never had enough business.

What he did have was an office manager that churned out entries into the Reader's Choice contest by the hundreds.

What's wrong with churning out entries by the hundreds? It's a dog eat dog world out there. Surely you don't want govt intervention? Then there'd be only paperwork and restrictions. Besides, it would take the fun out of the cheating, and cheating can be an act of liberty in the private sector.

How about if Pleasanton Weekly actually wrote articles about local businesses? I heard of a store that did a charity event and the Weekly wouldn't give them the time of day. No listing, no photos, no nothing. Not even a blurb on the daily email (so glad i could see someone complain about early mornig yard work for days but not one mention of a charity event)

Then they expect said store to advertise. If the Weekly wants to be a community newspaper it should support the community and its businesses. Not just grab more email by hosting this contest.

I vote for the Massage Parlor on Main Street.
