Michael Austin is a registered user.
Jeremy, I had a near death experience 30 years ago. A full-size sedan drove into bike lane, struck me, and run over me. During transport, EMT could not start IV due to extremities blood flow shut down and concentrated on internal core body injuries.
In the emergency room doctor after doctor explained my injuries. You have five or more broken ribs; we cannot count them all, they are too cylindrical on film. Another doctor, your left lung is collapsed, it looks like it is trying to inflate itself, we will monitor it, a tracheotomy may be necessary.
Another doctor, you have a bruised heart muscle, our concern is valve damage. The orthopedic returned, your right knee is dislocated, with tendon displacement.
Another doctor, your left kidney is lacerated. I will ask the intern to fit a catheter to monitor blood loss. I said I will pee on demand; I do not want a catheter.
The intern returned, he said, I did not want to do it either. Another doctor, you have concussion, he had my helmet in his hand, he pointed to fracture in my helmet. The helmet saved my life. Without it I would have fractured skull.
After multiple surgeries, a year in wheelchair, a titanium right knee. I was walking again unassisted. I am very fortunate.
