The Foothill varsity water polo teams opened their seasons with impressive wins last week.
On the boys’ side, the Falcons opened their 2017 campaign against Heritage High School with a 17-11 victory. The game turned out to be the season-opener after the originally scheduled opener was canceled due to excessive heat and smoke.
Standouts for Foothill were Ryan Weiglein with five goals, Matthew Dotson with four goals and one assist, and Nathan Williams, also with four goals and one assist.
Playing time was well mixed for all on the team and additional contributions came from Dylan Pottgieser (one goal, two assists), Sanjay Menon (two goals), Drake Southern (one goal, two assists) and Dylan Weiglein with two assists.
Harrison Carter led the defensive charge with seven saves in goal and Jacob Hvidt had two saves, splitting time in the cage. The opening win gave the team much appreciated momentum heading into the next game.
The Falcons then beat Livermore 13-11. Livermore has become a friendly yet fierce rival, as many of the boys compete together during the club season and know each other well.
The teams traded goals throughout, but standing out was Dotson with his exceptional play at set, scoring five goals with three assists.
Williams continued his workhorse/team leader/playmaker ways with three goals, three assists and three steals. Also contributing were Southern with a pair of goals, Pottgieser with one goal, one assist and two steals, Dylan Weiglein with the first goal of the game from half-pool and Ryan Weiglein with the game clinching 13th goal from the one-spot on a man-up play.
Carter had 14 saves and one assist in goal.
On the girls’ side, Foothill opened its season with a 13-10 come-from-behind victory over Livermore.
The Falcons fought back from a 6-2 deficit with great team offensive and defensive efforts. Five Falcons scored, led by senior Emily McElroy’s four goals, followed by seniors Lauren Dennen and Erin Schafer each with three goals each.
Senior Madison Weiglein had two goals and a team high five assists with, sophomore Beth Earle also scoring a goal.
Junior Samantha Ramirez led the defensive charge in the goal with 12 saves.
