Starting next February, San Francisco and Marin County residents will have to do something they’ve never done before: dial the numbers 4-1-5 when making a phone call.
The good news is that nothing will change for those of us with 925 area codes.
In February 2015, Marin County will begin rolling out a new 628 area code for new customers. Existing customers will not have change their area codes.
With the introduction of the new area code, all local callers will have to dial an 11-digit number to make a call, even 415 customers dialing within the 415 area code.
The 415 area code, which was established in 1947, includes San Francisco, most of Marin County and a small portion of San Mateo County, according to a Marin County news release.
Officials are urging residents to begin to practice dialing 1-415 before their calls starting next Saturday, Aug. 16, even though local phone calls without the area code will continue to go through until Feb. 21, 2015.
After Feb. 21, callers who don’t dial the area code will receive an error recording instructing them to hang up and dial again.
The 628 area code will begin to be assigned to new Marin County telephone lines starting March 21.

Do not know why the East Nay had no clout, but the phone co, changed us from 415 to 510 to 925.
No one pays to change all your printed material, or to tell all your contacts, it’s just a big loss,
and a nuisance.
Yet the nice people in Marin will NOT have their area code changed,
just new phone will have 628, so now knowing the area code is 415 will not indicate where you are calling.
You’re right. I remember when I first moved here, my phone number was 415. Then it changed to 510. When it changed to 925, the first few months people would ask me, “Where is 925, I’ve never heard of it???”. So the 628 people get to go through that now. Not only that, but they’ll have to do what San Jose is already doing, which is to dial an 11 digit phone number even if you’re calling your next door neighbor.
Why do we have to keep putting up with this 1950’s technology with land lines? Just switch to a cell phone. No need to dial 1. No need to dial 415 if you are in the 415 area.
