Vote Yes on Healthcare Measure AA

Original post made on Jun 3, 2014

Proponents of Healthcare Measure AA on the June 3 ballot talk about how a Yes vote won't increase taxes. That's because, of course, it extends the half-cent sales tax in the original Measure A that voters approved by a 71% margin in 2004, a tax that does not expire until 2019. Even so, the Alameda County Board of Supervisors decided to play it safe and put another measure on the ballot now that will keep the tax in place until 2034.

Since we will have a new source of revenue, the ACA (aka Obamacare) to fund these services, it would seem premature to extend the sales tax at this time. The current tax will not expire for another four and a half years - plenty of time if the ACA funds prove insufficient.

There is absolutely no reason to extend this tax at this time. Like stated, this tax already lasts until 2019. When the current tax (which was measure A) went to the ballot, they said the money was needed because of uninsured patients. We now have the Affordable Care Act (Obamacare). So uninsured patients should not be an issue (at least at the level it was before). Medi-Cal is the safety net for those on really low, or no income, and the amount of subsidies for those why want insurance can bring the cost of insurance down to $1/month.

The board of supervisors really like this healthcare tax as it gives each supervisor some money into their slush fund. They collect our tax and then distribute it to places where they feel they feel they will get the highest number of votes for "giving them money".

Remember that the board of supervisors is also putting another 1/2 % sales tax measure on the ballot in November to cover "transportation". They must think that the health care is more important than transportation by putting the health care to a vote first. This will be another good reason to vote down the upcoming transportation tax. I do not think the board of supervisors will be happy until the sales tax rate is 99%. We already have the highest sales tax and they want it higher and higher.

Why does our generation want to keep voting to pass taxes that will be paid by our kids?

Any tax is a infringement on my Constitutional Freedoms. Period. If people get sick, let them pay for it themselves. I'm tired of being everyone's piggybank. All thanks to our Dear Leader, Obama.
