A fundraiser for Janet Liang is taking place today, June 13, from 5-8 p.m. at Sweet Tomatoes, 4501 Hopyard Road in Pleasanton. Fifteen percent of sales will go toward Janet’s medical bills and expenses.

“Janet is an incredible woman, and we want to help her family defray some of the mounting costs,” wrote the organizers.

Print out this flier before heading to the restaurant.

Janet, a 2005 Amador Valley High School grad, was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia while majoring in international development studies at UCLA. She relapsed in 2011 and is currently undergoing experimental treatments in Texas.

  1. Just last week I received email notification that I am officially in the “Be the Match” bone marrow registry. I sincerely hope that I am one day matched with someone like Janet. Please consider registering as a potential donor…it only takes a cheek swab to register. Check it out at: “bethematch.org” Heartfelt wishes go out to Janet and her family.

  2. I registered in a bone marrow registry many years ago but have never been called in. Apparently, the probability of any one person being a good match is very low, which is why it is important to have as many people as possible register. In Janet’s case, asian donors have a higher probability of being a good match, but everyone should consider registering.

If, by chance, you are matched up with someone in need, you will have a chance to increase your karma through a bone marrow donation (a minor procedure). Also, if you should ever unfortunately need a bone marrow donation for yourself, you will know of at least one person who not only is a perfect match, but who also owes you a favor.
