Don't be caught unprepared when a neighbor or other friend appears on your doorstep today with a bit of Christmas cheer and possibly a nice gift for you.

Gifting is a vicious cycle.

If you didn't elect to put Neighbor Nellie on your Christmas List and they drop in with a gift, I don't think you need to have a "stand by" gift ready.

Better yet, say "Thank you - we appreciate the thought" and leave it at that.

Christmas is about being with friends and family, not something wrapped in a box that will be forgotten or discarded by the new year.

True friends don't expect a gift back. Many of us are on a tight budget to just get gifts for our kids, let alone all the neighbors or friends we know.
