AC Transit, the financially beleaguered service operated by the Bay Area the Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District, has been awarded $6 million in federal funds for its fuel cell energy system that will provide on-site hydrogen production to power its transit fleet.
AC Transit, facing major budget deficits and unable to reach labor-savings agreements with its drivers’ union, has been cutting service throughout the district, including much of its weekend service.
Sen. Barbara Boxer (D-California) announced the grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation as part of $27 million in new federal investments for California transit systems offering “cleaner, more efficient buses and other clean energy projects.”
“These investments will help make California’s transit systems cleaner and more efficient, while also creating jobs in communities across our state,” Boxer said.
The transportation department doled out the grant as part of its “Investments for Greenhouse Gas and Energy Reduction” program, also known as TIGGER II, which is funded by the federal stimulus recovery act.
Last year, California received more than $17 million for projects in Hayward, Santa Clarita, Los Angeles, and San Diego as part of $100 million distributed to 43 energy-efficient technology projects nationwide, and this year, the Federal Transit Agency awarded $75 million.

Are you kidding me with that headline? Who’s money is she ‘doling out’ ?
It is OUR money, and she is taking credit for Giving us OUR money back?

Has the water in the Valley been turned back on? Last time I drove through (June) there were signs “Thank Congress for the dust bowl”
Who does she think she’s fooling. That will not erase the cruelty she has dumped on us and our grandchildren. But, she’s hoping you’ll forget that tomorrow. What an insult.
As has been said before, it’s not her money to “dole out”. I might understand a headline like, “U.S. DOT grants $6 million to AC transit”.
Within the article, it might also be nice to state, “Senator Boxer agreed with the recommendations from the Dept. of Transportation that during our current downtrend in the economy, while over 15% of the workforce is underemployed, it is the best time to upgrade our buses using money taken from people that might need it for paying their mortgages or for food.”
Maybe, A C Transit needed the money or maybe not?
With our National Debt and people out of work needing jobs, do we really need to spend the money for buses? Is this a union pay off? Who really benefits? Does this help union drivers keep their jobs?
I found the headline interesting and timing of money coming to our area perfect for the coming election. What was that name, again? Box her?
When is the last time any of us has been to an AC, BART, or anyother type meeting to voice our concerns. We all just complain in Blogs like this. We just flap our yappers and stay “uninvolved” and reap what we sow……oh yeah and blame everyone else instead of ourselves.
Bad Headline. If Boxer actually gave the state of California her own personal money, the headline makes absolute sense. Otherwise, it’s incorrect. I do expect more from you, PW.
