Last week teachers, students and parents donned pink to in a statewide showing of support for schools. Today, Pleasanton mom Steffanie Gamecho is hoping they will do the same, this time with red.
The mother of three, with two enrolled at Donlon Elementary School, hoped that spreading the word throughout the district via email could show appreciation to teachers and raise awareness of Measure G, the parcel tax initiative.
“In addition to wearing red, [Donlon students] are also each giving a flower to their teacher as a show of support and appreciation,” Gamecho said.
While the red movement isn’t affiliated with the Save Pleasanton Schools organization that supports Measure G, the mom says she is in line with the group’s mission.
According to SPS’s website, they have raised $13,000 of their $30,000 goal, which is said to support printed materials, postage, phones and office space.
School board, city council hold joint meeting Monday
Members of the city council will cross over the Main Street divide to the school district board room Monday night for the annual joint meeting. Starting at 7 p.m., the groups will recognize the participants of Youth In Government Day, look over city and school district finances, and discuss other items of mutual interest.
The public is invited to attend this open meeting, located at 4665 Bernal Ave. While it is unconfirmed at this time that the meeting will be televised live, it will be recorded.
I’ll be wearing red today to support our wonderful teachers and Measure G, the school funding measure to support our schools. Vote yes on June 2 to save our schools.
I actually find it quite comforting to see so many parents on my daughter’s campus wearing red when they pick up their kids after school. It gives me more of a sense of how many parents are already aware of the effects that state budget cuts could have on our schools and are following the parcel tax issues.
It puts the opposition I read about here more into perspective, as a distinct minority.
Red should not be worn by anyone. Red is the color that gangs wears especiallly by the Crips and Norteños. Are the parents trying to bring in the gangs to influence the elections?
Red is also one of the school colors at Alisal.
This is getting ridiculous. These pathetic little fashion gestures are USELESS and likely non-compliant with state law. Political statements are not permitted on school campuses. Disguising them as “showing support for teachers” doesn’t diminish the fact that this is a BALLOT issue, and should be no more allowed than an anti-Obama or anti-Bush shirt.
And what of the child who just happened to wear BLUE today? One would hope that teachers are professionally bound NOT to comment on politically motivated fashion, but we’ve seen that many teachers don’t recognize professional boundaries. And suppose students (who have no such boundaries) criticize or ostracize a non-conforming fashionista based on politics?
Stop this fashion/political manipulation of our kids!

My children worn red on Friday because they did not want their teachers to be mad at them.
We support our teachers. We do not support a parcel tax.
