They call him the come-back kid and Foothill High’s quarterback Sean Mannion proved it again Friday night, leading his team to a 24-17 victory over cross-town rival Amador Valley High School before a capacity crowd at the Amador field.

Down 17-0 at halftime, Mannion and running back Michael Young made key plays that put the game in the can for the Falcons. The second-half march to victory started soon after the team took the field after a half-time locker room boost by Head Coach Matt Sweeney when wide receiver Patrick Lynch ran the ball in a 98-yard return, with Mannion then making the touchdown to put Foothill on the board.

It was like that through the second half as the first-half cheers from the Dons side of the field became quiet and their hopes of competing in the North Coast Section playoffs faded for the third straight year.

  1. Too bad Amador didn’t allow Foothill to presell tickets at Foothill, which has been a thing both schools have been doing for years now. Instead, all the Foothill parents had to stand in the long lines. Oh well, it makes the win that much more enjoyable.

Thanks AV administration!!! Always a class act.

  2. Common Foothill Fans, show some class. You won the game, at least be a good winner. At least AV didn’t lose to De LaSalle by 56 POINTS! 63-7!!!

I have no sympathy for anyone who waited in line. Anyone hoping to show up after 6:30PM and simply walk in to this game has never been to an Amador Foothill game.

  3. Just wanted to let everyone know what a wonderful time we had at the game on Friday. Both teams showed a great deal of sportsmanship! We enjoyed seeing how much school spirit students from each side had. It was a fun Friday evening and a great way to get involved in community events.
We arrived about 6:00, and indeed waited in line, but no big deal. It’s great to see so many people come out for a game under the lights.
In addition to the game itself, the choirs did an awesome job, as did the band and cheer squads from each team.
Another reminder of why it is so great to live in this town. We are all blessed.

  4. Foothill Fan-No one runs this town but I will admit, Matt Sweeney runs this school. What a return for this coach-if anyone doubts he makes a difference think again…what a complete stud.

  5. What an amazing game it was! Foothill has DONminated the Amador Valley Dons for the fourth straight year! 05 06 07 08…Foothill Falcons have kept the tradition going! Go Falcons!

  6. I wasn’t at the game but my kids were and they said it was awesome.. it is great to see how both schools have great teams across the board. Our kids are fortunate to have such great schools to attend.. those who bad mouth either school should be ashamed of themselves, we should support and applaud all those students, teachers, coaching staff memebers etc. they are all doing a great job.

  7. OK FALCSTER, a dose of reality. Foothill did not come close to dominating anything….. Down 17-0 (and it should have been worse) at Halftime to the Don’s!!! What Foothill did in the second half was show great courage and take advantage of opportunities.

After Foothill tied the game 17-17 with 5:17 remaining in the final quarter. AV recieved a kickoff after a game tying touchdown and everyone thought would have an opportunity to drive down the field to retake the lead. An unfortunate fumble on the first play of the drive gave the Falcons the ball 1st and 10 at the Don’s 21. With a very short field Foothill went in for the winning touchdown. Honestly I’m a bit surprised by Foothill’s high #4 seed in NCS. They lost to De Lasalle by 56 points, almost blew a 20 point lead vs SRV, who then beat M.V. who handily beat the Falcons.

I think the depth of the EBAL this year is amazing with 7 very competitive teams. M.V., A.V., and Cal all gave De LaSalle much tougher games than they were used to in thier old league the BVAL. Coach Ladecuer even commented at the NCS seeding meeting that any of the EBAL teams in the room would give St. John Bosco (their only loss) a very competitive game!

The Amador vs Foothill game was a great game on both sides (but certainly a tail of 2 halves), but was in no way a Donmination as you characterize.

  8. Although each school has had one undefeated league champion team over the last ten years, 2004 (AV) and 2006 (FHS), the series has been dominated by Foothill, winning 9 to the last 10 years.
    1999 – FH 37-14 2000 – FH 31-7 2001 – FH 24-17
    2002 – FH 20-13 2003 – FH 9-6 2004 – AV 21-17(10-0)
    2005 – FH 21-7 2006 – FH 23-6(10-0) 2007 – FH 20-13
