The Warren Jeffs trail in Texas came to a close today with a guilty verdict. He was charged with unlawful sex with two minors, aged 12 and 14.
Where are women’s rights in America when things like this are going with impunity?
Warren Jeffs, the so called ‘prophet’ of the FLDS (Fundamentalist Latter Day Saints) church in Texas was the leader of the church who thought it their God given right to marry as many woman as they wanted. Jeffs, for some sick reason, felt that marrying women, (he preferred minors) was a means to reaching heaven.
Unbelievable as it seems, Jeffs would consummate the marriage to these underage women on a bed set up on the church alter with a bevy of eyewitnesses. The audio tapes of the sexual encounter with his 12 year old bride were entered into evidence during the Jeffs trial.
Witnesses to this terrible act were many, including women from the sect who consulted the underage bride with tips on how to please the ‘prophet’ Jeffs.
This is one of the most disgusting examples on how women are treated with impunity in our country with no one to help them. Only after years of complaining to authorities in Utah, Arizona and Colorado, former captives of this sick cult, were finally able to convince Texas legal officials to act on allegations of sexual abuse against minors after warrants were issued from Utah and Arizona. With his conviction in Utah overturned in 2010, he remained on the lam for over a year.
Warren Jeffs officially took over as ‘prophet’ after the death of his father Rulon Jeffs in 2007. Jeffs held absolute authority over the community of 10,000 with FLDS followers obeying his every word. Jeffs was overseer of marriages and every aspect of everyday life in the FLDS community where this life under this strict dictatorship, was all the inhabitants had ever known.
Women, who Jeffs wanted, or wanted for other elders of the church, would be assigned away from their husbands, or given away with no reason, like cattle. Young men, who captured the eye of young teenaged women were seen as a threat to Jeffs and his elder cronies and cast out of the sect. These cast out boys, are also known as the ‘Lost Boys.’ These lost boys are cast out with no money, food, or any means of supporting themselves. They have been found living on the streets of Las Vegas trying to survive in a world that is completely alien and unknown to them.
The women, or girls, who are left behind must obey the laws of the elders of this society. There is no one who can or is willing to help them.
If this sounds like a pedophile paradise—it is!
With Warren Jeffs tried and convicted, isn’t it our responsibility as a society to help the remaining girls break the chains of enslavement and be free to choose their own partner in life? Or just live their life like everyone else in America.
We shouldn’t sit by and watch this tragedy unfold before us without trying to help.
Wherever there’s a fallen cult leader, one is waiting in the wings to pick up where he left off. We have to ensure that we stop the madness and help these girls lead a happy and healthy life without a group of sick perverts wanting to add them to their harem.
What can we do to help? This is 2011, how can this happen in America?
