What! We need a "special" walk to school week?
I walked to school for 13yrs [K-12]. Rarely had a ride. High school?
3.5mi in Idaho. Snow, wind, rain, sun, cold, hot...still had to walk...
Walk to School Week...give me a break!

It's to make everyone feel good about driving/dropping their kids off all the other weeks of school. Good for the environment, I know. Whatever happened to school buses? That would be even better for the environment than just one day of walking. What about figuring out how to bring school buses back?

Concomitantly we should have Parents Drive Responsibly Week; For a novelty, parents driving around the schools during this week should;

1. stay off the phone
2. Not run red lights
3. Don't turn your car to face children head on in a crosswalk. If you are hit from behind you will be pushed into the children. Don't turn your wheels until you can complete the turn.
4. Don't drive toward children in a crosswalk. You're actually supposed to STOP your car, not slowly accelerate towards the children crossing (something 99% of Pleasanton drivers do everyday.)

You mean residents will actually be able to access offerings of our community ? Wonder if the pedestrian countdown will be obeyed ?

Pleasanton isn't a very friendly place for the automobile-less. I am always being cut in front of by right-turning cars when I am entering the pedestrian crosswalk, even with the light signaling that it's MY TURN. Please, people, use your heads. Bigger, heavier, faster car will cause significant damage to smaller, slower person and not even get a dent on the bumper.

This is just another liberal feel good program to get us to put down our donuts and cell phones, get out of our God-given SUV's, and become sandal wearing granola eating Obama Marxist Communist Socialist tree-huggers like them.

Ah, Mikey. Typical selfish gas-guzzler. You probably drive to the store five minutes away to pick up a toothbrush (unless, of course, that was satire).

Good topic!!As a school Crossing guard, I see many things. I can tell you who the bad drivers are and their habits. I am amazed at how many children are driven to and from school. I realize we live in different times now but suggest children walk in a group or with parents if they can. Please teach your kids to not use cell phones or text while crossing the street or riding bicycles. Adults and Children alike must get off their bikes to cross any intersection. We love our kids!

Hey I have an idea! Instead of congratulating ourselves over hot chocolate for walking to school one day, we could consolidate all of the car trips to Alisal and other Elementary Schools into specialized bus routes, replacing dozens of trips with a couple every day. We could even paint the buses a special color and give them unique safety privileges to keep the kids safe. Oh wait...
