Crutches, Canes, Wheelchairs, and Walkers needed for Haiti

Original post made by Rotary, Downtown, on Jan 23, 2010

Local residents can clean out their garages and closets to help victims of the earthquake in Haiti. The Rotary Club of Pleasanton will be collecting crutches, wheelchairs, walkers and canes at a collection event on Saturday, Jan. 30 at the Amador Valley High parking lot from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Rotary has partnered with MedShare, which has a warehouse in San Leandro. MedShare, a non-profit organization, collects usable medical supplies from hospitals and physician’s offices, inventories them and then ships containers with supplies specifically ordered by Third World medical providers. MedShare will ship the mobility devices to Haiti.

The earthquake and resulting medical treatment has left many Haitians with injured or missing limbs. Donating used, but clean crutches, canes, walkers and wheelchairs will help these victims regain a measure of mobility.

If you have any of these items, they are badly needed in Haiti. Could you pass this information on to others so we can get the word out quickly? We are working on write-ups in the papers but it is short notice so word of mouth and social networks will be invaluable in getting the word out.

We just received direct communication from healthcare centers throughout Haiti that there are thousands of orthopedic injuries. The need for mobility devices will also be in the thousands. Please help get this message out to everybody you know so we can help out the people of Haiti on the 30th. We know our community can pull through if people know about this.
