No helmets required

Original post made by Tony Hawk, Birdland, on Apr 27, 2009

Yesterday I took my son to the bike/skate park off of Stoneridge Dr. It's a great facility, and a couple dozen kids were there on their bikes, skateboards, and scooters. But only three had their helmets on, despite a sign at the front requiring this. Can anyone tell me either why the police do not enforce this, or since they are not enforcing it, why the sign isn't removed? I don't like laws (or ordinances) if they aren't enforced.

And on a sde note, parents, why don't you make your kids wear their helmets?

Did you call 911 or 555-1212 to report it?

Those 2 numbers don't go together. Did you mean 411 or 931-5100.

Plus... not wearing a bike helmet isn't exactly a life threatening emergency. I'd hope no one would call 911 for that!

I'm not going to call the cops, I'm just wondering why they don't enforce it. I'm sure that if a kid concusses himself at the bikepark that Pleasanton would be sued, so I'm not sure why we're not taking this preventative step.

Maybe the cops need to be made aware that there are kids skating without helmets. The cops do a great job in this town enforcing the law, but they can't be everywhere. Citizens need to make them aware of problems so the can take appropriate action. If you're concerned enough to write about it here pick up your cell phone and call.

Leave the kids alone let cops look for real criminals. Helmet only required to wear by law for cyclists under 16 not skateboarders.
Also natural selection process will sort this out, only those with helmets will survive
