Treasury Secretary Jack Lew, in an interview with Bloomberg TV today, stated that he met with the inspector general closely after assuming his post, but he was presented only with a list of ongoing investigations, not specific details of the audit on conservative groups.
“From the moment I learned about it, I was outraged,” he said. “It is a matter of the highest priority that the IRS be beyond suspicion in terms of its integrity. Here we had numerous anti-taxation, tea party groups that are so adamently opposed to social welfare that it borders on hate. Now, when they make the claim that half of their use of funding goes to social welfare we should believe them, right?."
Lew continued, "An IRS with integrity would simply allow these anti-tax, social welfare hate groups to operate beyond even a scintilla of suspicion. That's why our inquiries were so utterly outrageous."
